MTSS Training - Library
Please choose a session that interests you most

MTSS schedule:

The first session will be from 8:30-9:30 and will cover the following strategies: Mastery Learning-Worked Examples-Problem Solving Teaching
Mastery Learning
Use of formative assessment to allow students to continually perfect skills. Involves small instructional units that are mastered before moving to the next skill, and opportunities to repeat previous steps.

Worked Examples
Worked examples, examples that have been solved, can be used as a model during instruction to reinforce the problem solving process.

Problem-Solving
Teaching
Explicitly teaching a set of logical steps and strategies that maximize the students’ ability to solve novel problems.

The second session will be from 10:00-11:00 and will cover the following strategies: Cooperative Learning/Jigsaw-Spaced vs Mass-Reciprocal Teaching

Reciprocal Teaching
A metacognitive strategy where students practice comprehension strategies during small group instruction. Students act as the teacher in each comprehension strategy.

Cooperative Learning
A small group of students in varying levels working together to create shared learning goals rather than working alone.

Spaced vs. Mass Practice
Frequent deliberate practice sessions for students to demonstrate mastery over a long period of time rather than long practice sessions over a short period of time.

-----------------------------JCPS Forward Information-----------------------------------------------

Hey, Viking Nation!

As I hope you know by now, I'm our Building Ambassador for JCPSForward! My goal is to help share things internally that some folks miss that might not be on social media or that don't read our district newsletters to ensure that ALL educators in JCPS have access to the same information.

This week, I'm also highlighting ways to stay connected to grow professionally with JCPSForward:
  • #JCPSChat - Next Monday from 8:00-9:00 and all next week on FB. Our topic will be "Teacher-Generated" questions. Have a question for other JCPS teachers? DM @JCPSForward or email MeMe Ratliff. Want to learn more about Twitter chats? Click here.
  • The Friday Forward newsletter - Did you know over 1/2 of all JCPS educators interact with the Friday Forward educator newsletter each week?
  • JCPSForward Facebook page - daily shares about a range of educational issues. We also share our upcoming events here like our meetups. Search for JCPSForward - be sure to like and follow.
  • Twitter - @JCPSForward - follow us and tag us to spread awareness. We share resources and opportunities and promote instruction in our schools. Want to learn about Twitter? Click here.
  • Instagram - Tag @JCPSForward to spread your work!
Have ideas? Want to connect? Have something cool you want to have blasted on social media? Let me know! As your ambassador, I share great things externally to district leads as well!

Other dates/opportunities on the horizon:
  • Another #JCPSReads event for Read Across America Day will be held on March 1.
  • February 28 will be Digital Learning Day. We will celebrate in JCPS with the hashtag #DLDayJCPS. Resources will be shared in this week's Friday Forward.
  • We will have our first #PiDayJCPS event on March 14!
If you have anything that you would like to share with the district, please let me know! Let's show off our Viking pride!

Best,
Patti Concepcion

From Mr. Nelson
Guest composer Shirl Atwell will be visiting the Valley Orchestra on Tuesday, February 12th (today) during 2nd Period to work with the students on a piece that she composed titled
Handelian. This is an incredibly rare opportunity for our students to work first-hand with the composer of a piece of music. Please do not call students out of class during this period. The students are preparing this piece for the adjudicated event KMEA Assessment on March 15th that we will be hosting here at Valley, and this opportunity will deepen their learning and enhance their performance.

Library Tuesday Tip:

The Valley Library is celebrating Black History Month throughout February. Check out the page on our website with books in our library catalog that spotlight African-American history and works by African-American authors.
